Renovated McClellanville Library to open on May 17
CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will open the renovated McClellanville Library, located at 222 Baker St, on Friday, May 17. The public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. at the branch.
The McClellanville Library closed in December 2023 to undergo renovations as part of the ongoing $108.5 million referendum-funded project passed by Charleston County voters in 2014 to build five new libraries and renovate all existing branches. Updates included new paint, carpet, and furniture. Designs for the renovations were created by Liollio Architecture.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will include speakers from the library and Charleston County Government, as well as elected officials. In addition to the ribbon cutting, patrons will have the opportunity to meet the branch staff, take pictures with CCPL’s mascot Owlbert, explore the branch, and more.
The McClellanville Library is located about 50 miles north of Charleston. The McClellanville community had a library long before the establishment of CCPL. The library began in 1886 when McClellanville was just a "summering place," and one of the summer visitors organized a library society with a group of women in the community. The library continued to operate until June 19, 1931 when it became part of the Charleston Free Library system (now CCPL). The library was housed in a school building for many years before being moved to the town building on Pinckney Street and then the building on Baker Street where it currently resides.
