Charleston, SC – Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) is pleased to announce the introduction of sensory toolkits across all its branches, thanks to a $4,750 grant from Volvo Cars USA Operations Community Fund. These toolkits, designed to support individuals with sensory sensitivities, are available for in-branch use only. CCPL is committed to creating inclusive and welcoming library spaces.

The sensory toolkits contain various items, curated in collaboration with the Lowcountry Autism Foundation, aimed at helping individuals reduce sensory overload, stay calm, and focus, including:

  • Noise reduction headphones

  • Sunglasses

  • Sequin sensory mats

  • Fidget strings

  • Weighted lap pad

  • A “Sensory Sack”

  • And more (for a full list of items included, contact your local library branch).

Though not funded by the grant, CCPL is also working on additional neurodiversity resources. These include the introduction of Social Stories and Visual Schedules to assist patrons in navigating the library environment with greater ease. These programs are in development and are expected to launch in 2025, further expanding the library’s efforts to serve the Neurodivergent community in Charleston.

Cassie Welch, CCPL Children’s System Coordinator, highlighted the significance of the initiative:
“CCPL is committed to creating inclusive library spaces. By providing sensory toolkits at all our locations, we are working towards increasing access to the library for the Autistic and Neurodivergent community of Charleston. The items included in the kit can help reduce anxiety, frustration, or behaviors associated with these feelings, and they also help people better focus on tasks and activities. We want all people to have joyful experiences at the library and hope these tools can help.”

Funding for this initiative was made possible by a grant from Volvo Cars USA. Their Operations Grant Fund, which is held in conjunction with the Coastal Community Foundation, is designed to support local organizations in four program areas: Education, Environment and Sustainability; Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging; and Innovative Solutions. The Sensory Kits are available for in-branch use at all 18 library locations. For a full list of CCPL locations, and more information on other library services and resources, visit ccpl.org or contact your local library location.
