CCPL to Open Renovated West Ashley Library on March 18
CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will open the renovated West Ashley Library, located at 45 Windermere Blvd, on Monday, March 18. The public is invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. at the branch.
The West Ashley Library closed in December 2022 to undergo renovations as part of the ongoing $108.5 million referendum-funded project passed by Charleston County voters in 2014 to build five new libraries and renovate all existing branches. Updates include:
-
new interior finishes
-
replacement of shelving
-
refreshed collection items (books, audiobooks, etc.)
-
new furniture
-
technology upgrades
Designs for the renovations were created by Liollio Architecture with MB Kahn handling construction.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will include speakers from the library and Charleston County Government, as well as elected officials. In addition to the ribbon cutting, patrons will have the opportunity to meet the branch staff, take pictures with CCPL’s mascot Owlbert, explore the branch, and more.
The West Ashley Library was erected at the rear of the South Windermere Shopping Center on land donated to Charleston County by South Windermere Realtors through William H. Ackerman. Constructed by County Council with $70,000 in County funds, the library opened on April 20, 1964. Civic clubs and individuals, including the St. Andrew's Council of Civic Clubs, promoted the building of the branch library. Enlarged in 1971, the West Ashley Library is in a very real sense a community library and is one of the most popular places in the area.
The branch closed in December 2022 to undergo renovations. For more information about this library branch and updates on the construction of the other facilities, please visit ccpl.org/construction.
