    • Abstract:
The contribution of German-born merchants to Liverpool's economic development in the nineteenth century is examined based on the extent of in-migration, and ethnicity, and identity. The growth of German nationalism after 1871 is deemed to have reinforced ethnic identity. The degree of German-born merchants' acculturation and social integration is also examined.
