    • Abstract:
This article considers the impact of prejudice, racism, and violence against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) during the COVID-19 global pandemic and traces the historical origins of anti-Asian racism and violence through the social and political climate reflected in popular culture and media. The authors then share anti-Asian racism teaching strategies, art pedagogies, and student work examples in their preservice elementary and art education classes with the hope that other art educators will resonate with the teaching approaches and use them to address anti-Asian hate crimes and violence in art education. Art educators are strongly encouraged to use contemporary artworks by artists concerned with discrimination, racism, harassment, xenophobia, nativism, or misogyny in their art curriculum. In this way, they can engage students with meaningful art teaching practices and classroom discussions that promote the value of social justice and confront the destructive power of racist ideologies and practices.
