    • Abstract:
      While successful instructional innovation is the result of efforts of individual faculty and instructional support staff, it is also influenced by institutional and contextual factors that include personal characteristics, pedagogies, curricula, and other tangible and intangible dynamics. These same forces can also work in concert to assure successful innovations. In recent times many instructional innovations developed in educational institutions have remained with the individuals who developed them or have been abandoned for lack of funding. Institutionalization would make these innovations available to other faculty and staff, leading to widespread use within the institution. Routine and continuing use of instructional innovations makes them integral aspects of the structure and culture of the institution. To encourage institutionalization and extend the innovation beyond the originating entity, institutional administrators are involved. This article discusses the issue of institutionalization and examines environments that favor moving an innovation from initial development to implementation and institutionalization. It also discusses systems and structures that enable widespread adoption of innovations.
