- Abstract:
This research examined the effect of English language proficiency on the academic success, and cultural and social adjustments of Chinese international students pursuing higher education degrees at an HBCU in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The researcher used a qualitative research design for this study to acquire information regarding the lived experiences of Chinese students. The study used a phenomenological approach to investigate these experiences by conducting interviews. Nine Chinese international students participated in this study to convey how language fluency impacts them in their educational pursuits, social interactions, and cultural adjustments. Five themes emerged from the study providing responses to the three research questions. The themes were in alignment with the three theoretical frameworks of the study, Acculturation, Adult Transition Theory, and Cognitivism. The results of the study revealed that students experienced a range of emotional responses while adjusting to the new environment such as, anxiety, fear, excitement and nervousness. Additionally, the findings of the study indicate that English language fluency is vital not only for educational purposes but is equally as important for career aspirations, domestically and abroad.
