    • Abstract:
Positive student-teacher relationships at the elementary level have been linked to academic achievement, healthy social and emotional development, and improved behavioral outcomes. Cultivating positive relationships with students is a challenge for educators working in a field that is dominated by standards, testing, and behavioral issues. Knowledge of how to consolidate practices effectively into the teaching profession that are cost-effective and require little instructional time to implement is a necessity. This cross-sectional survey questionnaire evaluates the intentional relationship practices included in the EMR method. In addition, the study describes school personnel's perceptions of building relationships with students during the first 6 years of schooling in a midsized suburban school district in south-central Pennsylvania. Data was collected through an online survey to draw conclusions about the best practices administrators, teachers, and support staff can utilize to establish, maintain, and restore positive student-teacher relationships. Conclusions derived from the study demonstrate that when classrooms are ones that are routine-based, supportive, encourage student leadership, and celebrate student individuality students are more likely to establish relationships with practitioners. In addition, the data endorsed the notion of respect, creative choice, humor, and individual bonding experiences when school personnel seek to maintain positive relations with students. Finally, empathy, understanding, humility, wait time, and following up after periods of conflict were considered significant when restoring positive student-teacher relationships.
