- Abstract: The massive, systemwide move to remote learning over the past few months created huge frustrations for educators. Those sentiments showed up in the results from surveys conducted by the EdWeek Research Center and in Education Week's reporting. Teacher morale dropped, student engagement was down, and budget cutting plans were already starting. But, at the same time, by necessity, K-12 educators across the country upgraded their tech skills faster than ever before. What impact will those newfound technology and virtual teaching skills have on K-12 education when school buildings reopen? And could the increased use of technology heighten already big concerns about data privacy and students spending too much time in front of screens? This issue of Technology Counts tackles those kinds of questions in an effort to help K-12 school district leaders, principals, and teachers tackle the technological challenges they will face in the year ahead. Articles in this issue include: (1) Editor's Note: Planning for the Future, Hoping for the Best (Kevin Bushweller); (2) COVID-19 Is Shaping Tech Use. What That Means for Schools (Kevin Bushweller with contributions from Daarel Burnette II, Benjamin Herold, Elizabeth Heubeck, David Saleh Rauf, Sarah Schwartz, and Madeline Will); (3) It Was a Bumpy Ride, But Teachers' Tech Skills Are Rising (Sarah Schwartz); (4) Education Week Asks Teachers: How Did COVID-19 Change Your Teaching, for Better or Worse; (5) Like It or Not, K-12 Schools Are Doing A Digital Leapfrog During COVID-19 (Mark Lieberman); (6) Coronavirus Pushes Schools Closer To a Computer for Every Student (David Saleh Rauf); (7) Why Principals Worry About How Mobile Devices Affect Students (Alyson Klein); and (8) Q&A: How Tech, Coronavirus Will Change K-12 Learning by 2025 (Catherine Gewertz).
