    • Abstract:
The Seventy-first Congress authorized a survey of the education of teachers on a nationwide scope which has been conducted during the last 3 years. According to the Authorization Act, the National Survey of the Education of Teachers was to study "the qualifications of teachers in the public schools, the supply of available teachers, the facilities available and needed for teacher training, including courses of study and methods of teaching." This volume, the second in a series of six volumes, presents data in three segments. Part I, Teacher Personnel in Public Schools of the United States, covers: (1) the purpose and scope of the teaching personnel study; (2) age, sex, marital status and teaching experience; (3) extent, source, and nature of the education of teachers; (4) subjects taught by high-school teachers; (5) supply and demand studies; and (6) recommendations. An appendix to Part I contains 23 tables. Part II, Student Personnel--Prospective Teachers, presents: (1) introduction and scope of the study; (2) personnel data about the student groups; (3) college career data about students and their families; (4) residential and precollege educational data about students; (5) national and occupational backgrounds of students' families; and (6) summary and recommendations. Lastly, Part III, Staff Personnel of Institutions of Higher Education, describes: (1) purpose and scope of the study; (2) academic rank, age, sex, marital status, and provision for old age; (3) education and teaching experience of faculties; (4) salaries in institutions of higher education; (5) teaching and service load of faculty members; (6) professional growth and activities of staff members; (7) teaching staff of practice-demonstration schools; and (8) recommendations.
