- Abstract: This report presents the number and percentage of students dropping out of and completing public school for the 2000-2001 school year. Information came from the Common Core of Data (CCD) surveys, which provide basic data on public K-12 institutions, students, and staff. A total of 45 states reported dropouts using the CCD definition. The 9th-12th grade dropout rate ranged from 2.2 percent in North Dakota to 10.9 percent in Arizona. Most states had rates from 4.0 to 7.0 percent. Data on high school dropout rates for each of five racial/ethnic groups indicated that the rates were generally lowest for white, non-Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islander students and highest for American Indian/Alaska Native; black, non-Hispanic; and Hispanic students. Relatively high dropout rates were most often observed in reporting school districts serving large or midsize cities and least frequently in rural areas. States' numbers of high school completers varied widely. Most high school completion credentials were in the form of a diploma. Asian/Pacific Islander and White, non-Hispanic students were more likely to have higher completion rates than the other three groups. Large city school districts were more likely than other districts to have a relatively low high school 4-year completion rate of less than 60 percent. (SM)
