      This book deals with the Central Siberian Yupik Eskimo language as spoken on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, an island near the Bering Strait and on the tip of the Asian mainland opposite Russia. This book has been used with college-level classes composed of a mixture of Yupik speakers and well-prepared non-speakers (people who have studied other, related Eskimo languages). The focus of this book is on grammar and vocabulary, not on speaking. The book is divided into 18 chapters, each dealing with a particular aspect of Yupik grammar and vocabulary. Following these chapters, is a collection of annotated, traditional Yupik stories, written in Yupik. There are also four appendices: "Noun Case and Verb Mood Endings"; "Inflection of Demonstratives"; "Personal Pronouns"; and "Summary of Ways Base-Final 'te' is Affected by Suffixes." In addition to a subject index and a bibliography, there is a "Yupik-English Vocabulary" for bases and postbases and enclitics, and a English to Yupik vocabulary. (Contains 66 references.) (KFT)
