    • Abstract:
This German language textbook is intended for classroom use. The theme of the text relates to the Renaissance, and the narrative is based on Sir Thomas More's "Utopia" (1516) and relates to the experiences of its central character Raphael among the inhabitants of the strange island. Each chapter touches lightly on some thought provoking issue, such as crime and punishment, wealth and poverty. However, "Utopie" itself is not so much concerned with a discussion of social questions as with describing Raphael's encounter with the Utopian islanders, whose unfamiliar ways occasion in him surprise, wonder, and eventually, the wish to inform the people of his native Europe about them. Each of the seven narrative sections is followed by a wide variety of exercises from which a selection can be made to suit a particular class. Questions on the text and on geography related to the Age of Discovery are followed by punctuation and grammar exercises for those with the relevant experience. Each chapter ends with a poem connected with the "Wish, Wonder, and Surprise" theme, suggestions for an essay and a German-English vocabulary list. As additional material of a different nature, at the back of the volume there is a humorous dialogue, together with a tried and tested comedy. (Author/VWL)
