This functional curriculum is intended to teach people with developmental disabilities or other learning problems how to prevent infection with HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The entire curriculum includes six video segments, four illustrated brochures, 28 slides and illustrations, as well as a guide to 18 lessons. Introductory materials cover such topics as policies and procedures, administrative and parental support, preparation of instructors, assessment of outcomes, and approaches to instruction. Lessons address questions such as the following: "What is AIDS?"; "What causes AIDS?"; "Who can get AIDS?"; "How can you tell if a person has the virus?"; "How can I protect myself if someone near me is bleeding?"; "How can I protect myself from getting the AIDS virus through sexual activity?"; "How can I say "no" to having sex?"; "What is a condom?"; "How do people use condoms?"; "How do people get condoms?"; "How can I insist on having safer sex?"; "How can using drugs pass the AIDS virus?"; "How should I treat someone who has the AIDS virus?"; and "How can I find out if the AIDS virus is in my body?".
