- Abstract:
This report presents the proceedings of a regional workshop on the training of secondary school teachers in the use of computers in general education, which was conducted to launch a pilot project for the countries of Europe and stimulate international cooperation in the field. Introductory materials note that the tasks set for workshop participants included the examination of 11 case studies prepared under contract with Unesco; the identification of innovative trends in pre- and in-service training of secondary school teachers in this area; and the development of proposals for regional and international cooperation in the implementation of the regional pilot project for the biennium 1988-1989. The report is divided into three parts: (1) background of the workshop, including objectives, participation, documentation, and organization; (2) the results of the workshop proceedings, including examination of the case studies, strategy guidelines (the needs of the beginner, developing skills, and the informatics-competent teacher), and resource implications; and (3) proposals for regional and international cooperation, including criteria, principles, application area, institutions, and cooperation. Appendixes include a copy of the workshop agenda, a list of participants, the chairman's position paper ("Teacher Training in the Context of a Changing Model of the School" by Rhys Gwyn), a bibliography of participants' papers received, a 94-item supplemental bibliography (of which 35 are in various European languages), and abstracts of 10 of the case studies prepared for Unesco.
