- Abstract:
Five hearings were held in the fall of l982 to evaluate nutrition education programs in Illinois. Representatives from schools and hospitals, and presidents or directors of organizations whose members might provide nutrition education testified. Testimony by 96 participants was in the form of responses to questions about: (1) the primary audience and number of people reached by nutrition education programs; (2) the biggest nutrition problem facing the primary audience; (3) program participants' perceptions of the importance of nutrition; (4) training in nutrition or a nutrition related field; (5) teaching methods and their effectiveness and the type of materials used; (6) current sources of nutrition information for updating nutrition knowledge; (7) information for improving nutrition education efforts; (8) new directions needed in nutrition education; (9) other area nutrition programs and teachers; and (10) who is responsible for nutrition education. The report is organized around responses to these questions, slightly modified to include sub-categories suggested by the testimony. Recommendations are listed after the discussion of the testimony where appropriate. Information on resource materials available for nutrition educators is appended. (JD)
