      A booklet for limited English speakers on buying furnishings provides information on what to do before going shopping for furniture, how to make a selection, and how to pay for the acquisition. Cartoons, questions about the message in cartoons and narrative passages, checklists on things to evaluate, and the phonetic pronunciation of key words are presented. Specific topics include the following: (1) considering how much furniture is needed, what kind, and who will be using it; (2) deciding what type of furniture is needed most; (3) learning about different styles of furniture and their prices through newspapers, magazines, catalogs, libraries, and through experts; (4) making a plan before shopping about the size of the room and doors; (5) becoming knowledgeable about places that sell furniture and what to consider about the stores' policies and reputation; (6) learning about furniture that can be assembled by the purchaser and furniture that is unfinished; (7) shopping for used furniture and shopping at auctions; (8) reading ads; (9) learning about upholstered furniture, including the frame, springs, padding, and covering; (10) buying a bed; and (11) buying by cash, installment contract, revolving, loan, and layaway.
