- Abstract:
This introduction to elementary Yoruba is divided into two parts. The first section is on sound drills, and the second section concerns Yoruba greetings. The first part includes exercises to enable the student to master the Yoruba sound system. Emphasis is on pronunciation and recognition of the sounds and tones, but not memorization. A tape is intended to go with this material; the general pattern is that the instructor says the words and expressions, time is left for repetition, and then a second instructor says them again. The written lesson contains everything that is spoken on the tape. The lessons include greetings, conversation, comparison of vowel sounds, nasalized sounds, nasal syllabic consonants, vocabulary lists, and tone exercises. The second section includes greetings and responses in Yoruba and English for various occasions. (NCR)
