    • Abstract:
      The purpose of this project was to develop and implement an articulation program between fifth-grade elementary teachers and sixth-grade middle school teachers which would serve to enhance communications regarding the basic skill development of individual students in the area of mathematics. The vehicle for communications that was produced took the form of a basic skills checklist which was passed directly from one teacher to another. The commitment by teachers to this project was achieved as a result of in-service time and a summer workshop in which specific plans and procedures were implemented for a pilot program. As a result of this articulation program, department chairpersons were able to monitor the system of communication, the student misplacement rate with regard to the instructional program for sixth-grade students was significantly reduced, and the amount of instructional time for sixth-grade students during the first two weeks of school was more than doubled by eliminating the need for diagnostic testing. These improvements in the educational system enabled the teachers to plan more effective instructional programs by having "in hand" information regarding sixth-grade students, and provided increased class time for this instruction.
