      Though schemes in the United States and United Kingdom are mentioned for comparison of study-service concepts, this survey of study-service schemes focuses on post-secondary study-service in Asia and Africa. Organized within the context of formal education, usually by educational institutions, study-service schemes are characterized in the report as: (1) involving young people in practical activities which help meet the basic needs of other people, (2) providing a worthwhile educational experience for participants, and (3) encouraging and helping education systems to continually adapt to society's needs. The survey defines and gives examples of types of schemes--intervening, interwoven, subsequent, and parallel--and covers some related schemes which are not organized within formal education systems. Why study-service is being used, rationales for different approaches, and problems encountered are also discussed. A final section deals with the need for further research in aspects such as cost and effects of study-service on participants, communities in which they work, and educational institutions. The appendix lists study-service reports and studies by country and names and addresses of key people in the study-service field. (RS)
