    • Abstract:
Ponders on the electioneering campaign held by presidential candidate U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater in Illinois in 1964. Speculation on the impact of the social programs for Negroes such as employment opportunities emphasized by the city's Negro community on Goldwater's victory; Assessment of the effectiveness of Goldwater's platform against street crime amidst the perception of Illinois partisans that such crime is attributable to Negroes; Suggestion that Goldwater's position on nuclear weapons and his being not a conservative may contribute to his failure to win the rural vote.
