- Abstract:
The article discusses coping and resiliency strategies used by African American women doctoral students at predominately white institutions (PWIs). According to the authors, black women students are sometimes forced to sacrifice overall well-being for the sake of academic achievement and persistence. It is suggested that while their sense of community and their desire to represent their communities positively encourages them to be resilient, these factors can also impose unhealthy pressures.
