    • Abstract:
The article examines censorship practices in the early modern Catholic Church. The author seeks to elucidate how church censors arrived at their decisions to censor a text, distinguishing the tools of propositions—similar to summaries—and qualifications—similar to index terms or subject headings to classify the findings based on the propositions. Themes addressed include the book "Scrutinium doctrinarium qualificandis assertionibus, thesibus atque libris conducentium," a guidebook for censors by Franciscan priest Giovanni Antonio Sessa published in 1709, distinctions between heresies and mere errors, and the utility of censorship records as sources for the historiography of the Catholic Church.
