    • Abstract:
This article evaluates various snow throwers. Heaviest and priciest Honda Motor Co.'s 96-lb. HS621AS ($854) comes with a four-stroke engine that eliminates the fuel mixing two-stroke snow throwers require. Overhead valves like the ones in car engines also helped make the 5.5-hp Honda one of the top performers. Husqvarna's ST21E ($575) occupies the lightest end of this spectrum. That and an aggressive auger helped the ST21E scramble up slopes and eat through drifts like a motorized mountain goat. Several human touches also make the ST21E easy to use, even on not-so-small driveways. Besides climbing inclines the quickest, the auger's biting action delivered the most pulling power over level terrain. A crank mounted near the handlebar also made the discharge chute easy to redirect quickly. While the ST21E vibrated the most and made the most noise, a thick handlebar cover keeps some of that shake away from your hands. Wing nuts also allow you to fold the bar forward for storage without reaching for a wrench. INSET: READY WHEN YOU ARE, CAPTAIN.
