    • Abstract:
      The aim of this study is to investigate and explain inconsistencies within the everyday pattern of school rules, and to explore how students and teachers interpret these inconsistencies. A field study was conducted in two primary schools. According to the indings, rule inconsistencies evoke confusion and criticism among students. Furthermore, implicit rules, i.e., unarticulated additions to or exceptions from the explicit rules, may at least in part explain inconsistencies in teachers' efforts to uphold school rules. Moreover, rule inconsistency and unarticulated implicit rules seem to create rule diffusion, which, in turn, leads to a prediction loss among students: they cannot always predict what will be appropriate behaviour and how teachers will react. This, in turn, seems to result in a negotiation loss for students. They cannot openly discuss and negotiate on rules they are not aware of. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
