This chapter describes the early life of Andrew Grove, a co-founder of Intel Corp., in Budapest, Hungary. Born Andras Grof in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, on September 2, 1936. His father, George, was a dairyman, and his mother, Maria, a bookkeeping clerk. When he was four years old, young Andras nearly died from an epidemic of scarlet fever that swept through Budapest. The fever caused a middle-ear infection that perforated his eardrums and left him almost totally deaf. The Grofs were Jewish, and the Nazis, who had come to power in nearby Germany in 1932, had committed themselves to the destruction of all Jews. To help conceal his Jewish identity, his mother gave him a new, Christian name, Andras Malesevics. Hungary was ruled by the communists after the war. A dedicated student, Andrew soon discovered that he had a talent for chemistry. He fled to Austria in October 1956 to escape the communist system of Russia.
