The article discusses how Chandler Robbins, a biologist at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the 1960s, developed the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), a nation wide bird monitoring program. Topics include how volunteer amateur bird watchers collect and submit the program's data during breeding season, how all the data are free on the BBS website, and how the program has impacted conservation projects.
