      The article provides information on the book "Hollywood's High Noon: Moviemaking and Society Before Television," by Thomas Cripps. The book provides a history of Hollywood as a marvelous entertainment machine in the days before television. It discusses the leap from the inspired innovation of new optical devices to the exploitation of those new devices in a marketplace; how Hollywood and movie-making became institutionalized early in the twentieth century; who went to the movies and why; combat over the moral and political codes to which movies would subscribe and censorship; the coming of sound film; alternative cinemas, including pornography, feature films by blacks and Jews, and documentaries by political groups; movies during the Great Depression; genre movies; and Hollywood and movies World War II.
