    • Abstract:
The article discusses a study which concludes that infants who were born prematurely to a group of women infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were far more likely to have HIV infection. Investigators discovered that 53 percent of infants who were born to women with a low level of immune reaction to a protein found in the envelope of the virus developed HIV infection. They note that the antibody to the protein may afford infants some protection against HIV infection during the last trimester of pregnancy.
