The article discusses progress by Ukrainian forces in ousting separatist rebels from areas they hold in eastern Ukraine. In early July, 2014 Ukraine's military regained control of the town of Slovyhansk and prepared to lay siege to the separatist redoubt of Donetsk. Separatist official Fedor Berezin expressed disappointment that Russia had not intervened on the rebels' behalf. Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey said fighting would continue until the revels had been routed.
