The article presents the author’s account of his experiences travelling through the Hejaz desert of Saudi Arabia. Topics include water wells across the desert, how people are trying to preserve Saudi Arabia's history as with a museum devoted to the Hejaz Railway, and how the cultural identity of the Hejaz differs from and has been impacted by the Islamic cultural identity in the rest of the country.
