- Abstract:
The article discusses the role of mistletoe, a plant parasite also known as witches' brooms that grows in trees and shrubs, in forest ecology. Topics include seed dissemination by exploding berries in the dwarf mistletoe plant, the correlation between dwarf mistletoe infestations and cavity-nesting bird populations, and the three types of U.S. butterflies dependent on mistletoe for survival. Biologist David Watson comments on the ecological effects of mistletoe.
