SPONTANEOUS BACTERIAL PERITONITIS: A LITERATURE REVIEW. (English)
    • Abstract:
The spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is defined as a bacterial infection of ascites in decompensated cirrhosis patients in the absence of any primary abdominal focus of infection. The main microorganisms involved in its pathogenesis are from the intestinal flora, and among them are Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae. Making a diagnosis is essential to perform paracentesis with subsequent laboratory analysis, because the symptoms often present are common to several pathologies. The total differential leukocyte count in ascites fluid and is a method widely used in the diagnosis of SBP, with levels exceeding 250/mm3 polymorphonuclear have good diagnostic sensitivity. However, values greater than 500 / mm3 PMN are more specific. Because it is a disease with high morbidity and mortality, early diagnosis and treatment are key to generate a real impact on the quality of life of these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
