This article discusses economic conditions of Liberia. Area of the region is 111,369 square kilo meters. Capital of the region is Monrovia. Principal towns comprising the region are: Buchanan, Ganta, Gbarnga, Kakata and Harbel. Liberia has 40 percent of West Africa's rain forest. Percentage of several ethnic groups in the region are: 20 percent of Kpelle, 16 percent of Bassa, eight percent of Gio and seven percent of Kru. Literacy rate in the region is 15 percent. 13 political parties took part in presidential elections on July 19, 1997 that saw former rebel leader Charles Taylor of the National Patriotic Front of Liberia emerge as president. There are 17 political parties in the region as of 2003. Natural resources found in the region are: Iron ore, rubber, timber, diamonds, gold and tin. The Government of Liberia has reported that it has discovered sizable deposits of crude oil along its Atlantic Coast. Agricultural products are: coffee, cocoa, sugarcane, rice, cassava, palm oil, bananas, plantains, citrus, pineapple, sweet potatoes, corn and vegetables.
