The Republic of Ghana attained independence on March 6, 1957. Ghana covers an area of 238, 538 square kilometers. Accra is its capital city. Other cities of Ghana include Kumasi, Tema and Sekondi-Takoradi. The climate of Ghana is mainly tropical. The nation is run by a democratic form of government. Gross Domestic Product of the country as of 2002 is 5.9 billion dollars. Geographically, Ghana is located on West Africa's Gulf of Guinea, a few degrees north of the Equator. The important linguistic groups of this nation include the Akans, the Guans, the Ga— and Ewe— speaking of peoples of the south and south east, and the Moshi—Dagomba—speaking groups of the northern and upper regions. Ghana maintains cordial relations with the U.S. Close relations are maintained between educational and scientific institutions and cultural links between Ghanaians and Afro-Americans are particularly strong.
