- Abstract:
The article discusses the link between Bible and anthropology and the development within anthropology during the 19th century. The author sighted Jewish individuals who studied anthropology but is silenced of his Jewishness. He argues that Jewish anthropologist is not insignificant and their reticence regarding biblical studies demands interpretation. After giving an overview of anthropology and the Bible, he analyzed the works of scholars William Robertson Smith, James G. Frazer, Solomon Schechter and Joseph Hertz. He commented on some scholars who perceived that bible and anthroplogy are not separate disciplines and to other figures who influenced anthropology. He reflects on the hypothesis that development of American anthropology is part of Jewish history.
