The article discusses a report in the January 30, 2014 issue of the journal "Cell" on the birth of two cynomolgus monkeys who had their genes edited using a gene-snipping tool that incorporates a bacterial enzyme called Cas9. Jiahao Sha of Nanjing Medical University in China, and colleagues used a technique, called clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR), injecting messenger RNA (mRNA) used to produce Cas9 into single-celled monkey embryos.
