This article reports on the launch of the "Science Advances" online open access journal from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in March 2014. The journal covers research topics addressed by the association's flagship journal "Science." Marcia McNutt, editor of "Science," discussed the factors that led to the entry of the periodical to open access publishing.
