    • Abstract:
When Art Cooper leaves GQ in June after 20 years at the helm of the men's journal, one of New York's most exclusive clubs will get that much smaller. He's one of a handful of editors in chief who can boast of two decades running a major American magazine. In the past year, a spate of longtime editors has been pushed out or upstairs, including luminaries like Playboy's 32-year veteran Arthur Kretchmer and Myrna Blyth of Ladies' Home Journal. Survivors like Stephen Shepard of Business Week, Paige Rense of Architectural Digest and Judith Nolte of American Baby are defying odds that seem to get steeper every year. Publishing has become an extreme sport, with editors facing off against growing competition, consolidation, a disastrous economy and a fickle public. Even established editors are forced to play by new rules.
