      The article discusses the history of the Modern Language Association (MLA) in response to criticism in 2014 of the organization's annual convention. Details are given describing the goals of the MLA since its founding in 1892 to promote modern literature in comparison to Greek and Latin classical literature. Different phases in the growth and development of the MLA are charted. Comments are particularly given noting and criticizing phases of nostalgia in the institution's culture.
