The article discusses the transformation of Venice, Italy, from a popular tourist attraction to a target of air raids during World War I and how Venetians responded to the war. It briefly describes the history of Venice, states that Venice experienced 42 airborne attacks during World War I, and discusses Venice's growth as a cultural and tourist center during the late 19th century and early 20th century. It describes the popularity of the Excelsior Palace Hotel on the stretch of beach in Venice known as the Lido prior to World War I.
