The article indicates that the effective implementation of a mature, capable library information system (LIS) is essential for achieving safe, effective and efficient care for patients. It examines the forces shaping LIS and electronic health records (EHR) structure, as well as defines terminology related to electronic management of health information. It also discusses standards and compliance of EHR, and elaborates on risk stratification and the lab's role in healthcare decision-making.
