    • Abstract:
This article focuses on the book "The Park and the People: A History of Central Park," by Roy Rosenzweig and Elizabeth Blackmar. The book is an ambitious and adventurous social history of Central Park. In Rosenzweig and Blackmar's assessment, Central Park has been a proving ground for the collective discovery of what the democratic provision of a public good means in an inegalitarian and capitalist society. From the standpoint of "The Park and the People," Central Park's history has been a continual process of definition, shaped by a multitude of goals and agendas.
