- Abstract:
A literary criticism discusses how the colonial Mexican play "La lealtad americana" ("American Loyalty") by actor Fernando Gavila is presented. It demonstrates Mexico's late colonial political climate, particularly its disaffection for Spanish rule. Focus is given to Gavila's use of the 17th-century seizure of a Panamanian port by British privateer Henry Morgan as a means to critique late-18th century colonial politics. Also addressed is the public display of the Spanish king's image in the play's denouement.
