- Abstract:
The author presents his thoughts on what he calls the myth of isolationism among U.S. politicians and the U.S. public during the early 21st century. He discusses opposition to potential U.S. military intervention in Syria by the U.S. Congress in 2013, the history of isolationism in U.S. politics, and foreign relations leadership in the U.S. Senate in the early 21st century. It also discusses support and opposition to military intervention among the U.S. Democratic Party and the U.S. Republican Party. The article discusses diplomacy as a non-isolationist tactic in U.S. foreign relations and points to an agreement between U.S. secretary of state John Kerry and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov concerning chemical weapons in Syria as basis for improved relations between the U.S. and Russia.
