    • Abstract:
This article recommends that libraries expand their collections of books on backyard building. In the past years, the growing interest in the backyard has sent many people to their local libraries to search for ideas on how to better use their backyards. Library users--both men and women--need a wide variety of material on backyard building. The best books include ideas to dream about as well as clear and practical information. They provide the tools necessary to adapt plans rather than simply offering plans. They also stress blending backyard projects into the total landscape design. One advantage of collecting basic books in this field is that information stays useful for a long period of time. Deck building has increased with the advent of preservative-treated wood. Style books will eventually appear dated, but not as rapidly as interior design books. Generally, libraries will want a number of broader books that encompass both ideas and projects, as well as specific books for those experienced do-it-yourself practitioners who need a variety of plans to choose from for a single type structure.
