    • Abstract:
This article reports on the National Biological Diversity Conservation and Research Act, or H.R. 1268, which was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Science, Space and Technology on June 12, 1990. The bill is, as of August 2004, before the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee's Subcommittee on Fisheries. The bill calls for the development of a federal strategy to preserve biodiversity; consideration of this tenet in the preparation of environmental impact statements; coordination of federal, state, and private efforts; research and education on biodiversity; and management and dissemination of data. The bill also would establish a National Center for Biological Diversity Conservation and Research within the Smithsonian Institution. The U.S. Senate version of the bill, S. 2368, is now before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
