      The article presents the 2012 Ben Pimlott Memorial Lecture delivered by historian Jean Seaton. It discusses the 1988 British government ban announced by the Home Secretary of Parliament Douglas Hurd on airing any spoken communications made by members of organizations believed to support political violence in Northern Ireland, especially the Irish Republican Army (IRA), Sinn Féin, and the Ulster Defence Force.
