An essay is presented which discusses German Catholic culture in Cold Spring, Minnesota in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a particular focus on the social aspects of a joke about the nine lives of a cat. An overview of the social aspects of the joke, including its portrayal of Cold Spring butcher John Medved and the clerk Michael Gross, is provided.
