    • Abstract:
This article examines the Austrian government's attitudes vis–à–vis the Polish nobility within the Polish territory of Galicia in 1772-1861--specifically, the differences in Polish nobles' legal status following passage of legislation linking noble status to property ownership. The author finds that such laws created three groups of Polish nobles: 1) the "szlachta posesorska" (landowners with serfs); 2) the "szlachta zagrodowa" (landowners without serfs); and 3) the "szlachta cząstkowa/poddańca" (non-landowners with feudal obligations). Such laws dissolved the unity/cohesion of Galicia's Polish nobility, dividing land owners from non-land owners (who ended up with the same legal status/position as peasants). Those divisions, moreover, were further increased by electoral laws concerning elections to the national parliament, where landowning nobles became a privileged constituency.
